Vietnamese Artists |Pham An Hai

Pham An Hai was born in 1967 in Hanoi and graduated from the Hanoi Institute of Fine Art in 1995 and received his Master of Art in 2006.  He draws his inspiration from the city of Hanoi, its streets and its old architecture and each buildings individual character.  On that level, many of Pham An Hai’s paintings may be viewed as cityscapes or landscapes of his home city and its surroundings.  One can usually discern houses, buildings and narrow lanes, imagining the city in various seasons or times of the day, Hanoi in winter or Hanoi in the red light of the evening sun.  However, sometimes, there is a tranquil, romantic edge to these works.  On that level, Pham An Hai’s cityscapes often simulate inner landscapes, landscapes of people, of their hearts and souls.  Many of these paintings seem to depict memories of tranquility, others, executed in more rapid and powerful brush strokes, seem to express urgency and anxiety captured in time.  These abstract works representing emotional labyrinths were recently termed soulscapes by Asian Art News.  Pham An Hai has participated in several exhibitions in Vietnam, in Britain (1999), Australia (2000), Hong Kong (2001, 2002), Singapore (2001, 2004), Belgium (2002), Thailand (2003, 2006, 2007), Japan (2005), USA (2005), Italy (2006), and Korea (2006).  His works were recently purchased by the Vietnam Fine Art Museum and Singapore Art Museum for their permanent collections.
